Toyota Motor Corp. issued two separate safety recalls that affect about 143,000 Toyota Tacoma, Toyota Land Cruiser and Lexus LX 570 vehicles worldwide.
In the first recall, Toyota said in a statement Thursday that the Land Cruiser and LX 570 are susceptible to a seat-belt tension sensor malfunction that could deactivate the passenger front, knee and side airbags.
A Toyota spokeswoman told Automotive News on Friday that there were about 95,900 Land Cruiser and LX 570 SUVs from the 2008 to 2019 model years worldwide involved. She said about 89,700 of those were in the U.S.
The automaker said it continues to work on a remedy for the problem and will notify owners by mid-February.
In the second recall, the automaker said a brake master cylinder seal on the Tacoma can become damaged over time and leak brake fluid, diminishing the function of the front brakes. It affects about 47,000 Tacoma pickups from the 2018 and 2019 model years globally, with about 44,000 in the U.S. The Toyota spokeswoman said the defect is linked to a parts supplier but declined to name it.
Owners will be notified in late January.
The spokeswoman declined to comment on whether the safety recalls have caused any crashes or injuries.
