These are the most incredible space photos of 2018

The best space photos transport you.

Sometimes they can take you to a time – the 2017 total solar eclipse – or a place – rock formations in Utah under a cloudless sky – but no matter what, these images allow you to leave your own small portion of the world behind and trade up for another.

The Royal Observatory Greenwich’s Insight Investment Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition has honored the transformative nature of space photography for the last 10 years, and 2018 is no exception.

The contest judges picked the best photos from more than 4,200 entries in five different categories including “People and Space,” “Aurorae,” “Galaxies,” “Our Moon,” and “Our Sun.”

“Whether it was a newcomer with an awe-inspiring nightscape of the Milky Way or an experienced astro imager with an epic photo of glowing cosmic dust, the field of images had such a high standard that the winners are truly superlative examples of the art and science of astrophotography,” BBC Sky at Night editor Chris Bramley said in a statement.

So, put your feet up, find a big screen, and scroll on through the best space photos of the year.
