After the launch of the Oppo F9 Pro last month, Oppo has now announced the launch of its mid-range smartphone – Oppo F9 – in India.
The new edition to the F series isn’t quite as exciting on the specifications sheet as the F9 Pro or the Find X, but at its price, it is any way intended to be a middle of the road device.
Design
The Oppo F9 sports a 6.3-inch Full HD+ display with a waterdrop notch. The tiny notch with the 19.5:9 aspect ratio gives the phone a 90.8% screen-to-body ratio.
The Oppo F9 boasts of unique aesthetics that looks striking in the sunlight.
Mid-range specifications
The Oppo F9 offers some upper mid-range specs. That means a MediaTek Helio P60 chipset, 4GB of RAM (the 6GB variant is not coming to India), and 64GB of internal storage (expandable up to 256GB with microSD).
There’s a 3,500mAh battery. It isn’t spectacular for a phone with such a large screen but there’s Oppo’s proprietary VOOC Flash Charge technology which gives you two hours of talk-time with just a five-minute charge.
The Oppo F9 runs ColorOS 5.2, the company’s customized UI layer, over Android 8.1 Oreo.

Camera
Oppo has been asserting that while it positioned itself as the ‘Selfie Expert’, the company is now focusing on all-round imaging capabilities. There’s AI smarts all over as well.
The Oppo F9 is equipped with dual rear cameras (16MP + 2MP) with the primary sensor boasting of an f/1.8 aperture lens. This, plus the secondary sensor calculates the depth-of-field to achieve better bokeh shots.
On the front, there’s a 16MP camera that collects 296 feature points for each subject, referencing them against its massive database of facial images, analyzing features before making enhancements, customized for each subject. If vanity is your thing, you’d probably like the AI Beauty Technology feature that offers up to 8 million different personalized beautification effects.
Pricing and Availability
The Oppo F9 comes in two color variants – Mist Black and Stellar Purple – and is priced at 19,990 rupees ($279). No, the red color variant in the photos is not making its way to India. It will go on sale from September 15 across offline retail stores and online exclusively on Flipkart.
