- The Nest x Yale smart lock will finally get Google Assistant integration starting tomorrow, August 29.
- The smart lock has been for sale since March of this year, so this feature has been a long time coming.
- You’ll be able to check, lock, and unlock your Nest x Yale device from anywhere using only voice commands.
It’s been quite the journey for the Nest x Yale smart lock. First introduced in 2015 as the Yale “Linus” lock and then rebranded in a partnership between Nest and Yale, the smart lock didn’t hit store shelves until March of this year.
Now, starting tomorrow, August 29, the Nest x Yale lock will finally get Google Assistant integration, allowing you to control your smart locks using nothing but your voice.
This very welcome update will make the powerful Nest x Yale smart lock even more useful. If you’re working in the kitchen and can’t remember if you locked the door or not, you can simply say to your Google Home, “Hey Google, is the front door locked?” Google Assistant will chime in and let you know the lock’s status.
If the door is not locked, another voice command will lock it up.
You can also use the very powerful Routines functionality within Google Assistant to set up a schedule/hotword for locking your doors along with other smart home functions. As an example, you could create a “Goodnight” Routine that locks your Nest x Yale smart lock, turns off the lights throughout the house, and sets your Nest thermostat to an energy-saving setting.
You can also perform these functions from anywhere using Google Assistant on your smartphone. Granted, you could perform the majority of these functions previously using the Nest app, but now you can do it with just your voice.
Considering Google owns Nest, it’s surprising that it took this long for Google Assistant functionality to work with the Nest x Yale lock. Regardless, the update is most welcome and should make current owners happy — and possibly convince people on the fence about buying a smart lock to take the leap.
