Millions Of People Still Play Skyrim Every Month, Todd Howard Says

The Elder Scrolls V: Skryim has been one of Bethesda’s biggest success stories ever. Originally released in 2011, the acclaimed RPG remains immensely popular. According to game director Todd Howard, “millions” of people still play the game every month.

“Even now, the amount of people who play Skyrim seven years later; millions of people every month are playing that game,” Howard said during a speech in Barcelona recently, as reported by GI.biz.

Skyrim was originally released in 2011 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. A Special Edition for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One was released in 2016, with a Nintendo Switch version landing in 2017. The game is also available on PlayStation VR. At E3, Bethesda announced a version of the game for Amazon’s Alexa device.

This is all to say, the game is pretty much on every platform you can imagine. It’s not hard to see why Bethesda keeps putting the game on new platforms: $$$$$

“If you want us to stop releasing it, stop buying it,” Howard joked.

As of 2014, Skyrim had sold 20 million copies, but this figure of course does not include sales on PS4, Xbox One, and Switch, along with continued sales on legacy platforms.

Skyrim and the Skyrim Special Edition remain among the most popular games on Steam, with concurrent user figures peaking at around 16,000 today.

Bethesda Game Studios is currently working on multiple new projects, including an all-new RPG called Starfield and The Elder Scrolls VI. These games are still a long time off, with both potentially not releasing until new consoles come out. A new Elder Scrolls game for mobile, Elder Scrolls Blades, is launching this fall.
