Andersson reports to company President Shinji Yazaki and will replace Yutaka Inagaki in his new duties.
Bo Andersson, the former General Motors purchasing boss who was named head of Yazaki Corp.’s European operations last year, also will lead the supplier’s North and Central America operations, the world’s largest maker of wire harness systems said Saturday. Andersson, 62, reports to company President Shinji Yazaki and replaces Yutaka Inagaki in his new duties. The appointment was effective Feb. 21. Inagaki was named special adviser, a company spokeswoman told Automotive News.
The former Swedish army major joined Yazaki in July. Before that, Andersson served as an adviser for both global automotive and nonautomotive organizations.
After the army, Andersson kick-started his career in the automotive sector at Saab in 1987, where he was vice president of purchasing.
In 1993, he began his 16-year stint at GM, where he weaved through several purchasing roles and eventually worked his way up to vice president of global purchasing and supply chain. He held that post from 2001 to 2009 and played an integral role in slicing $2 billion from the automaker’s purchasing and supply chain costs.
In 2013, Andersson was the first non-Russian to be named CEO of Russia’s largest automaker, AvtoVAZ.
In the midst of tumult, Andersson was determined to eliminate corruption and reverse archaic state contracts, Automotive News reported in 2016. He was pushed out that year after being held responsible for a $1 billion loss.
Yazaki, in Susono City, Japan, ranks No. 13 on the Automotive News list of the top 100 global suppliers with worldwide parts sales to automakers of $15.6 billion in 2016.
