Why this all or nothing attitude with some of you? The 360 ended the generation in a tie with PS3 for all intents and purposes. How can you say it didn’t matter? They did a lot better than they did this generation, right? I’m sure the headstart played a role in that. There were other factors to be sure, but I think the headstart did have a positive effect overall.
The danger in launching first is that your competitor has the opportunity to potentially launch a more powerful console at a similar price.
I’m not saying this to root for one brand or the other, I’m just looking at it as objectively as I can.
My view is, if you can launch first and still end up with a comparably powerful console then it will be a fairly significant net benefit. If you launch early, though, and your competitor brings out a more powerful console at around the same price it will partially nullify the advantage depending on how big the lead is and how big the power advantage is.
