Redesigned 2020 Kia Soul stays funky for Los Angeles Auto Show

Kia Motors Corp. will keep its boxy Soul urban runabout true to its funky inner spirit when it unveils the third generation at this month’s Los Angeles Auto Show.

A teaser of the redesigned small car, in bright Kelly green, shows that the next iteration maintains the right-angled rear with mammoth taillamps stretching up the sides.

The rear pillar gets a more forward-leaning angle and the blacked-out “floating roof” look that is in vogue across the industry, as seen in the Nissan Maxima, Lexus RX and GMC Terrain.

Kia, in confirming the car’s debut in Los Angeles, called the Soul an “icon of Kia design.”

The South Korean carmaker said the new Soul hits the market next year with a “bold, immediately recognizable design, uncompromising versatility and a fun-to-drive personality.”

It will be available in several powertrains, including turbocharged and all-electric versions. The 2020 Soul EV will be sold only through select retailers in select markets with limited availability.

U.S. sales of the Soul were down 14 percent to 85,839 vehicles through October.
