Put your OnePlus 6 notch to work by making it a battery status bar

  • A new app will turn your OnePlus 6 notch or Huawei P20 notch into a battery level indicator.
  • The app, so far, only works on the OnePlus 6 and Huawei P20.
  • The app works by adding a live wallpaper to your home screen and comes in free and paid versions.

You may love the notch, you may hate the notch, or you may be totally indifferent. But one thing is for certain: the OnePlus 6 notch and Huawei P20 notch are just sitting there, doing nothing for you except taking up screen real estate.

Well, if you happen to own a OnePlus 6 or Huawei P20, you can now put that notch to work by turning it into a battery level indicator.

You can do this with a new app independently created by XDA Developers forum member kumarsid7. The app — called Notch Battery Bar — is available in both free and paid versions on the Google Play Store.

Here’s what it will look like when you use Notch Battery Bar on your OnePlus 6 or Huawei P20:

As you can see, the battery bar changes color as it gets lower or higher with charge.

The way the app works is by creating a live wallpaper that has the battery bar shaped perfectly to fit around the notches on the OnePlus 6 and Huawei P20. It might work on other phones as well, but it might not fit and would, therefore, look pretty wonky.

The Notch Battery Bar app comes in two versions — a free version that has one wallpaper, and a paid version that lets you select any wallpaper you wish and then place the battery level bar on top. The paid version of the app is $0.99.

I don’t know about you, but this app is a double-edged sword for me. On one hand, I like the fact that it’s making a useless, ugly thing useful and would allow me to get rid of the battery percentage indicator on the status bar, thus clearing up some space. But, on the other hand, it also draws attention to the notch and how ugly it is, which makes it seem like a silly product. I applaud the developer for trying something fresh, but it might not be what people are ultimately looking for.

What do you think? Is this something you would find useful or a distraction? Let us know in the comments!
