Here’s when Huawei plans to launch Android Pie-based update

  • A Huawei South Africa spokesperson has revealed that its Android Pie update will be released at IFA next month.
  • The company said the update would come to the P20 series in September, followed by the Mate series “in the future.”
  • It’s unclear whether any other Huawei devices will receive the update during this time frame.

Android 9.0 Pie is out now and many manufacturers have been working to deliver the update to their devices. Now, it seems like a Huawei representative has revealed its plans for the update.

A Huawei South Africa spokesperson told MyBroadband that the manufacturer would release its EMUI 9 skin, based on Android Pie, at the IFA trade show next month.

“First, the P20 series will be released in September, and the Mate series will be launched in the future,” the spokesperson added, according to the publication.

What about other devices?

In other words, the P20 series seems like the only major Huawei device range with a firm Android Pie timeline. It’s unclear if this statement means the P20 Lite will receive the update at the same time too.

The statement also raises questions about updates for mid-range and low-end Huawei devices. Hopefully the Project Treble framework — primarily available on devices that shipped with Oreo — means more devices get updated.

The news comes a few weeks after a report that Huawei was testing Android Pie on the P20, Mate 10 Pro, Honor 10, and Honor V10. In response to the report, an Honor representative told Android Authority that the company didn’t have an internal timeline to share for Android Pie.

We’ve contacted Huawei’s representatives for confirmation of the latest Android Pie news and will update the article accordingly.
