Rylo’s 360-degree camera lets you shoot first and edit later, now Android-compatible

  • Rylo announced its eponymous 360-degree camera is now available for Android.
  • The Rylo camera features a mobile companion app that lets you edit footage and send it to Facebook and Instagram.
  • The Rylo camera is available for $500.

After previously being available only for the iPhone, the Rylo 360-degree camera is now available for Android devices.

The $500 Rylo features two 208-degree lenses with f/2.8 apertures, and is a bit smaller than the GoPro Fusion. Each wide-degree lens features a Sony sensor that can record up to 4K video at 30 frames per second. It will take you an hour to take the Rylo from full to empty, though you can swap out the drained battery for a full one.

What separates the Rylo from its competition, though, is its auto-stabilization and software suite.

Rylo was co-founded by Alex Karpenko and Chris Cunningham, who co-created Hyperlapse. Released in 2014, Hyperlapse uses gyroscope data to create super-stabilized time lapse videos. Rylo mostly acts the same way and uses excess information from the 360-degree sphere of video to push out stabilized footage.

The software tricks do not end there, as Rylo’s mobile companion app lets you look back at your footage and pick, crop, and export a 16:9, 1080p video from your 360-degree footage. You can also use the app to pick multiple points of interest and follow a person or thing.

The end result is a camera that lets you record sharp footage and remain in the moment, but also make edits after the fact. Since the Rylo does not feature Wi-Fi, you must use the included cable to transfer footage from the camera to your phone.

Speaking of cables, the only difference between the iPhone and Android versions of Rylo is the included cable. Whereas the iPhone version includes a Lightning cable, the Android version includes microUSB and USB Type-C cables.

In terms of compatibility, not every Android device will work with Rylo. The company published a list of recommended devices, which include Galaxy and Pixel flagship smartphones from the past year. Generally, it should work if your device features at least 1 GB of RAM and runs Android Marshmallow or later.
