Although most of the Marvel talk lately has been about the recently released Black Panther and the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War, there’s another cool Marvel property that’s coming out soon. The second season of Jessica Jones will be available to stream on Netflix later this week, so we thought we’d look back and see how the ex-superhero private investigator came to be.
Way before Jessica Jones first appeared in a Netflix series, she was written into existence in the comic Alias, which was first released in 2001. Created by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Gaydos, the comic was originally designed to follow Jessica Drew–Spider-Woman–but Bendis decided instead to focus on Jones, who had once been a superhero but turned away from that life to focus on being a detective.
Her superhero persona was Jewel, a super-strength character who hasn’t been talked about much outside of the pages of Alias and the Netflix series. However, from Alias we know that Jewel was held captive and tortured by Zebediah Killgrave, who eventually forced Jewel to try to kill Daredevil.
In the video embedded above, the GameSpot team goes through all of this and more, explaining how Jessica Jones came to be the character who gave up the superhero life and who now has her own Netflix show.
