2018 Detroit Autorama cars

Detroit Autorama is deeply rooted in the traditional hot rod and custom car world, and while those trends fell out of favor over the years, both seem to be back in full force for the 2018 show. Alongside these ‘rods and customs, there’s a trend towards drag race-inspired custom builds that would have looked at home on a quarter-mile in 1965.

This year’s push for more traditional builds hasn’t completely taken over the show — there’s still plenty of variety for folks into muscle machines, custom trucks and modern builds, as well as modern competition vehicles. Many of the cars, like Kevin Anderson’s purple 1947 Cadillac convertible, dubbed  “The Crystal Cadillac,” are making their public debuts after months and years of painstaking work.

We’d like to sound off on who we think will take Autorama’s coveted Ridler Award — the prize for best in show — but it’s too soon to tell, and we don’t have the right ISCA scorecard on hand to judge these cars ourselves.

Stay tuned for more in-depth coverage of this year’s Autorama as the show develops — until then, check out some of the coolest cars we spotted on our first lap around the show in the gallery above.
